General Santos City (July 29, 2009) – The 3rd Regional Peace and Order Council Region 12 (RPOC-XII) Conference was held today (July 29) at the Phela Grande Hotel, General Santos City.

Guest of honor, DILG Secretary and Chairman of the National Peace and Order Council (NPOC) Ronaldo V. Puno Jr. along with Sarangani Governor Miguel Rene A. Dominguez, Sultan Kudarat Governor and RPOC-XII Chairperson Suharto T. Mangudadatu, General Santos Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr., as well as mayors and leaders of their respective municipalities and barangays were present during the conference.

Members and officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) were also in attendance during the event to present their briefing on the Peace and Order Situation in the region.

In his speech, Sec. Puno addressed concerns regarding the order of the suspension of military operations (SOMO) against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in line with the peace negotiations with the AFP and the MILF wherein the task of pursuing and capturing lawless MILF individuals will be assigned to the PNP and the AFP will stand ground but hold their defensive positions.

“The suspension of military operations only applies to the AFP military operations alone and not to the other members of the Regional Peace and Order Council.” Sec. Puno said.

“This does not mean that the AFP will no longer be involved in pursuing lawless individuals. Once deputized by the PNP and RPOC, thru the convergence office, the AFP can and will still assist the PNP in the pursuit.” he added.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Region 12 (PDEA-XII) Chief Rene M. Orbe, PNP Regional Director P/C Supt. Josefino G. Cataluña, 6th Infantry Division Commander Brig. General Alfredo S. Cayton Jr. presented their briefing on the regional peace and order situation citing the numerous joint police and military operations in the area which includes the capture of Lawless MILF Group officials and members as well as other lawless elements.
